How To Eliminate Toxins Around The House

Three months ago I was diagnosed with Lyme Disease. Since then, I have done a ton of research and discovered certain things I can do to put my body in the best condition possible to heal, and that involves certain detoxing methods, changing my diet by eliminating toxins in the things I eat, and also eliminating toxins from the things I breathe in and put on my body. I addressed the changes I made in my diet in the “Lyme Disease Diet” post, so I won’t get into that. Rather, I want to spend some time and talk about how to eliminate toxins around the house.

This is interesting. I’m a fitness Coach and never truly understood the impact that the things you put on your body and breathe in had on you. For years I’ve been concerned mainly with the food and supplements you consume. It took something like this, being diagnosed with Lyme Disease, to do research and open my eyes to what is really going on. Trust me when I say this, you live in a TOXIC environment, and you might not even know it! And those toxins can and probably are having a major impact on your health.

Toxins in the Products you Put on Your Body

You think that deodorant you’re using is good for you? Think again. What about the toothpaste you use? CRAP! Here’s what you have to understand. Your skin is an organ, and anything that you put on your body, whether it’s water, deodorant, lotion, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, hand soap, etc. are all absorbed into the skin and into the body. So all of those awful chemicals that are added to pretty much everything anymore are being absorbed into your system. Nasty. That can wreak havoc on your immune system and ability to lose weight. Yes, what you put on your body can be a reason why you’re having issue shedding those extra pounds! And your body living in a toxic state can lead to many diseases and even cancer. Obviously nobody wants to experience any of those.

Before I made changes, I was using Old Spice for my deodorant. I sweat a lot (and for Stinkbugsome reason even more now that I’m going through treatment), and it was the brand that worked best for me. I don’t need to be walking around smelling like a garbage can! However, after much research, I discovered that it’s nothing but a chemical concoction. If I’m trying to eliminate these nasty Lyme bugs, I can’t be putting additional toxins into my body. I have switched to a brand called StinkBug Deodorant (yeah, ironic), and it’s worked great. It’s 100% organic with nothing harmful in it, at least from the research I’ve done.

Natural ToothpasteI used to use Colgate, but switched over to a better brand called Tom’s. However, I discovered that Colgate owns Tom’s, so I switched yet again. The new toothpaste I am using is a vegan, non-GMO, fluoride free one called Nature’s Gate Natural Toothpaste.

Hand Soap

Not many people think twice about what hand soap they use because, well, it’s hand Natural Hand Soapsoap. It eliminates bacteria, yes, but it also can be loaded with chemicals that put toxins into the body.

Dishwasher Soap

Organic Dish SoapWhat you use on your dishes is important as well. There is almost always residue left over, and that residue can be very toxic for you if it’s from a brand that contains a lot of chemicals. This is the brand we just switched to called Wave.

Pay attention to what you put in your hair! Before I made the switch to the shampoo I have Organic Shampoo now, I turned the old bottle over to check out the ingredients and discovered that I literally had no idea what 90% of the ingredients were. That’s not good. I have since switched to Avalon Organics for my shampoo and conditioner.

Diapers & Baby Wipes

For those of you who have children, you would be surprised to discover how toxic those big brand diapers can be for them. We have a little one still in diapers and just started using Seventh Generation. We have switched to Seventh Generation wipes as well.

Cleaning Wipes

Nobody thinks about the chemicals that are absorbed into the hands when using cleaning Natural Cleaning Wipeswipes, such as Clorox Wipes! Seventh Generation makes excellent cleaning wipes, and so does Green Works, which you see over here on the right.

Wood & Granite Countertop Cleaners

Again, this is something that not many people think about. When you clean your hardwood floor and then walk around barefoot, chemicals can be absorbed through your feet. And when you clean the granite countertops, unhealthy toxins can be absorbed into your hands if you touch it or if you are using something that was sitting on it. We use Seventh Generation for both the wood and granite cleaner.

Laundry Detergent

Take a minute and check out the ingredients in the laundry detergent that you have now. Natural Laundry DetergentChances are you have absolutely no idea what they are! Normally it’s just a massive chemical concoction, meaning every time you wash your clothes they are absorbing those toxins. And when you put on your clothes, you are absorbing those toxins as well. Cadia makes a great detergent, but Seventh Generation makes a great one as well.

Toxins You Breathe In

Himalayan Salt LampYou know those candles that you love lighting all over the house? The ones that make your house smell so good? Well there’s a great chance that those candles are giving off toxic fumes that you are breathing in daily. In fact, most candles are made up of paraffin wax, which when burned gives off toxic fumes of benzene and toluene, which are known carcinogens. In addition, the wicks more than likely contain heavy metals (such as lead), which are released into the air when burned. There are candles that you can get that are all natural, but rather, just do what we do, and burn essential oils in a diffuser. Essential oils are known to have multiple benefits and aren’t toxic. We also have Himalayan salt lamps throughout the house as well. They release negative ions, which purifies the air and increases the flow of oxygen to the brain.

So there you have it, the changes that we have made to make our house less toxic. If you’re curious as to how to eliminate toxins around the house, hopefully I have been able to help you out. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me on Facebook.
